Psalm 119

Psalm 119

Today we are going to look at the life-giving power of God’s Word and why it is essential to be in it daily—especially when we don’t want to. Through reading this poem of love for God’s Word, I pray our hearts would be so inclined to read more of the Bible. I pray we would turn to His Word and receive its life, instead of turning to ourselves or the world, which does the very opposite.

Take a moment to read this Psalm… meditate, journal, and reflect.

Psalm 119:25-32

25 My soul clings to the dust;
    give me life according to your word!
26 When I told of my ways, you answered me;
    teach me your statutes!
27 Make me understand the way of your precepts,
    and I will meditate on your wondrous works.
28 My soul melts away for sorrow;
    strengthen me according to your word!
29 Put false ways far from me
    and graciously teach me your law!
30 I have chosen the way of faithfulness;
    I set your rules before me.
31 I cling to your testimonies, O Lord;
    let me not be put to shame!
32 I will run in the way of your commandments
    when you enlarge my heart!

This stanza opens up with a line that says “my soul clings to the dust” which points to the brokenness that comes from humanity’s fallen and sinful state. In these verses, we see the divine influence the Word has on the psalmist’s heart, lamenting their tendency to cling to earthly things. I think we all can relate. Our human nature makes us want to cling to dust…the things of the world. We think they will satisfy our longing and give us life. Only His Word is able to revive us and sanctify (the act or process of being made or becoming holy) us. We cannot do it on our own. We are limited, and this is why the Word is so important (“for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God” Romans 3:23).

All Scripture is true and breathed out by God ( “All Scripture is breathed out by God and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, and for training in righteousness, that the man of God may be completeequipped for every good work” 2 Timothy 3:16-17). This means we can learn about God’s character, it checks our actions, it corrects us, and it trains us in righteousness. It leads to completeness—unity with God’s very own breath. That’s powerful!

For Christians, reading God’s Word is essential to growing in your faith. By reading it, you get to see the very essence of God’s character. It gives you the Good News and the salvation for your souls. It gives you the guidelines for the way to conduct your life. It brings truth and light to darkness. Though sinfulness grieves you, His Word strengthens you. His Word prunes and refines you. It is your lifeline.

It is evident in these verses, that the Word of the Lord arouses prayer (Psalm 119:25-29), confirms choice (Psalm 119:30), and inspires a renewed resolution (Psalm 119:32). It is the surest source of help in all kinds of tribulation.

We must hold tight to these precious Words, as they are powerful and can completely change you from the inside out…by the grace and will of God. By His Spirit and through His Word, He is able to take our small and selfish hearts, and enlarge them, so we will follow His commandments and strive to live a life that glorifies His name.

Don’t take my word for it…take His.

“All Scripture is breathed out by God and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, and for training in righteousness, that the man of God may be complete, equipped for every good work.” 2 Timothy 3:16-17

“The grass withers, the flower fades,

but the word of our God will stand forever.” Isaiah 40:8

“This God—his way is perfect;
    the word of the Lord proves true;
    he is a shield for all those who take refuge in him.” Psalm 18:30

 “Heaven and earth will pass away, but my words will not pass away.” Matthew 24:35

 Set your minds on things that are above, not on things that are on earth.” Colossians 3:2

Reflection Question(s): How can you set aside time each day to read the Bible?

If you are reading this and you want to start reading the Bible, but either (1) you don’t have one, or (2) you don’t know where to start, PLEASE email me, message me on Facebook, Instagram, etc. I would love to help you get started. I want everyone to receive and enjoy this Word of life!!

For the word of God is living and active, sharper than any two-edged sword, piercing to the division of soul and of spirit, of joints and of marrow, and discerning the thoughts and intentions of the heart.” Hebrews 4:12
